Friesen, a paramedic, founded Trek Medics in 2009 with aims of improving emergency medical systems in developing countries. Beacon is only possible because of the spread of mobile technology, especially in the developing world, over the last decade. A 2012 World Bank report concluded that more people now have mobile phones in developing countries than in richer nations. The plan is to continue to spread through the developing world, testing the system to ensure it meets the needs of each location.
